The most dangerous prisons than ever. Record of attacks since 2016

On September 28, an inmate at the Botafuegos prison (Algeciras) tried to provoke a riot inside the prison. He wounded a prison officer and urged his colleagues to support him and consolidate an uprising. He did not get his way, but it illustrates the tension that exists in this prison, in which his officials have already seen two of his cars burn in retaliation.

The Botafuegos prison, however, 'only' occupies fifth position in the ranking of the most conflictive prisons in Spain last year. With 2023 just released, it is time to take stock of the centers in which the most incidents and attacks on officials have been recorded in 2022. The data for the last quarter will be made public in the coming days. But those already known, the first three counted, mark a worrying upward trend: it has been the year with the most attacks since 2016.

Several factors stand out in this critical ranking. The first is how distributed the attacks are on the prison map. They are not concentrated in a specific area and the first five are far from each other. The second is that the number of this type of incidents has increased in the 5 that register the most. According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, in some centers (such as the one that occupies second place in the ranking) there have been more than double the number of attacks than in the most recent year with the highest number of attacks.
