Crime increases in Spain

Crime grew in Spain during the first quarter of 2023. Specifically, crime rose by 7.2% in the country, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior. Between January and March, homicides have increased by 13.5%, which amounts to 84 compared to the 74 that occurred in the same period of 2022.

Furthermore, crimes against sexual freedom have exceeded 3,000, which represents an increase of up to 16.9%. Kidnappings in Spain have also increased during this period of time and in 2023 they have gone from 13 to 34 compared to the same period in 2022.

Crime has increased in several autonomous communities. The region in which this figure has increased the most is Murcia, with 14.5%. They are followed by La Rioja with 13.8%, the Valencian Community with 12.2% and Catalonia with 11.3%. Likewise, crimes have also increased in Andalusia, the Balearic Islands and Extremadura by 10%

In the Community of Madrid, from January to March 2023, 103,456 crimes have been committed throughout the region, which represents an increase of 1.8% compared to the same time in the previous year.

According to the data from the Quarterly Crime Report of the Ministry of the Interior, criminal crimes are those that have increased the most in the Community of Madrid, specifically, attempted murders and intentional homicides, which have grown by 29.2%.

However, crime has decreased in Galicia, Cantabria and Castilla y León, with drops of 8.3%, 1.7% and 0.7%, respectively. In addition, there has also been a decrease of 9.3% in Ceuta.
